What Restored Concrete Pumps to Buy
There is a HUGE selection of new and used concrete pumps on the market with each different sizes and type serving specific concrete pumping needs. From trailer-mounted or truck-mounted to city pumps and pumps that pour a variety of materials such as shotcrete and big rock.
So many options can be confusing to someone who does not have the time to study all the possibilities. Here is a basic guide to what you might need, but, of course, call us to get help selecting the concrete pump that is right for your business and jobs.
Let’s assume that you already know that you need a trailer-mounted concrete pump. The brand leaders in the market are Schwing and Putzmeister followed by Reed and Mayco. Schwing and Putzmeister are more like a BMW (Schwing) and a Mercedes (Putzmeister).
- BMWs are look simple, with not too many electronics. They are very strong and expensive cars, similar to Schwing concrete pumps. Their simplicity makes them easy to repair.
- Mercedes are a bit more complex, have a lot more driver luxuries, and a lot more electronics. Similarly, Putzmeister pump models have more electronics that are helpful to operators but can prove quite difficult to repair.
Other things are similar in this analogy, such as Schwing wear parts seem to last a shorter period of time than those of a Putzmeister pump. For the most part, both machines are bullet-proof quality brands. if you take good care of them, grease them every 40 yards of pumping and change the oil regularly, then they will last a long time.
Hydraulic Ball Valve Concrete Pumps
Performance characteristics include:
- Can achieve high pressures, but with a small aggregate (1/2 inch or less).
- Work horses that can normally do almost anything as long as the rock size is the correct one.
Schwing offers the HBV models and Putzmeister offers the TKB models of hydraulic ball valve pumps. Both brands boast huge diesel engines and very powerful pump kits.
These pumps can be used for many types of applications like shotcrete which is mostly used for high-pressure applications like swimming pool walls, block walk pumping, columns, and tie beams.
“S” Tube Valve Concrete Pumps
Performance characteristics include:
• Handles aggregate as big as 1.5″ rock.
• Pumps volumes of up to 100 yards/hour.
These machines are quite dangerous if not operated properly or if used by an inexperienced operator, since they give you no time when a plug occurs. This can result in a burst pipe or hose, causing an explosion like a grenade. It is dangerous because aggregate, cement, oil and water will fly in every direction.
When used properly, “S tube pumps are amazing machines and you can make a lot of money on job sites with these fast pumpers.
Schwing has its own version of the “S” tube pump, which is the P305 (shown in featured image at the top of this article). This little unit has the power to push up to 1″ aggregate and pump up to 30 yards per hour with only a 49 HP diesel engine. They are light to tow and very maneuverable.
“Rock” Valve Concrete Pumps
Exclusively from Schwing, these bad machines:
- Handle up to 1.5″ rock.
- Can pump upwards of 100 yards/hour (the same as the Putzmeister units).
- Carry huge Diesel engines and pump kits that vary from 6 to 7 inches.
These “rock” valve pumps start with the BPA models and move up to the WP models with bigger pump kits. Nowadays all Schwing trailer pumps have the “SP” (stationary pump) designation before the model number.
